Asia’s Leading Maritime Gathering Has Bucked The Trend of Economic Recession
Tuesday April 21, 2009
Sea Asia, the iconic exhibition and conference in Asia showcasing the international and regional maritime industries, was launched at a packed opening ceremony in Singapore today (April 21, 2009)
The show, which has overcome the recession to capture the imagination of the global shipping community, was officially opened by Singapore’s Senior Minister and Co-ordinating Minister for National Security, Prof. S Jayakumar.
Senior Minister Jayakumar gave a speech to more than 600 senior shipping industry executives at the opening ceremony this morning.
In his opening speech, Senior Minister Jayakumar said: “Sea Asia 2009 is taking place in exceptional times as previous speakers mentioned earlier. The global economic outlook remains weak and there is uncertainty over the immediate future. Beyond economic issues, there are also other considerations in the areas of climate change, security, and navigational freedoms.
“In these challenging times, Sea Asia presents an opportunity to develop creative solutions and strategies that are Asian by nature but global in perspective. I am pleased to note that we have a good turnout with many of the industry’s leading minds and experts here with us. I hope that all of you will share your enterprise, experience and perspectives so that together we can collectively navigate out of the current storm and into safe and calmer waters. The longer term outlook for the maritime sector, in my view, remains bright and we should position ourselves to make bold moves when the weather turns for the better.”
Singapore Maritime Foundation chairman, SS Teo, said: “The positive response received for the show and the strong attendance for the conference speak for themselves. The Sea Asia 2009 exhibition is 60% larger than the inaugural show with seven country pavilions. We have also gathered 67 speakers from 18 countries and participants from over 50 countries for this three-day event.”
Sea Asia, which is co-organised by Seatrade and the Singapore Maritime Foundation, has established itself as the leading international maritime show for Asia since it was launched in 2007.
Andrew Callaghan, Seatrade Global Sales Director, said: “ Sea Asia 2009 has been a revelation to everyone connected with the show. This morning’s opening has set the standard for what is now established as a major event and I have no doubt the rest of Sea Asia will be an outstanding success.”
More than 8,000 people are expected to attend Sea Asia, which occupies 11,000 sq m of gross space at Suntec Singapore. It has more than 4,500 sq m of net used space on the exhibition floor populated by close to 350 maritime and shipping businesses from 27 countries. There are seven country pavilions from China, Japan, Korea, Norway, Panama, Singapore and UK.
