Must attend event in Asia
December 2005

Just six months after its launch date, the Sea Asia exhibition and conference in Singapore is well on the way to becoming established as a “Must Attend” event in Asia for the global shipping and maritime industries.

The Singapore Maritime Foundation and Seatrade, the event’s joint organizers, today announce that both bookings and inquiries for the inaugural event in April 2007 have been flowing in steadily since the launch of Sea Asia in May this year. The theme is “New Maritime Horizons”.

Several leading maritime service companies from various parts of the industry from different parts of the world have already committed to taking prominent positions at the Sea Asia event – with 16 months before the show is due to start.

This support follows on from the backing already given bysuch organizations as the Association of Singapore Maritime Industries (ASMI), Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), PSA International, the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, Singapore (SNAMES), the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB).

The organizers believe that the central theme of Sea Asia – giving voice to the growing aspiration of the maritime communities across Asia – is a major reason why the level of support has been so unusually high at this stage in the event’s cycle.

Already Sea Asia has been extensively promoted at other top level events such as Seatrade London in October and the response has been positivefrom a wide cross-section of maritime interests.

Work on developing the detailed themes of the three-day event taking place at the Suntec City Convention Centre, Singapore, is now taking place.A wide programme of events including a main conference, several one-day support seminars and other innovative gatherings designed to bring participants together will be announced early in 2006.

Mr S S Teo, Chairman, Singapore Maritime Foundation, said today: “I am pleased to note that work has started in earnest for the Sea Asia event. The Singapore Maritime Foundation believes that Sea Asia can help us establish Singapore further as a leading international maritime centre as well as a natural choice meeting place for the global maritime communities.I am also verypleased to hear that Sea Asia has already succeeded in garnering some first class exhibitors so quickly after its launch earlier this year.”

According to Christopher Hayman, managing director of Seatrade, Sea Asia is capturing the imagination of the maritime industry in both the East and West. He said today: “Although we have a good lead time for Sea Asia,we have been surprised and delighted bythe level of sheer enthusiasm wehavedetected for the event.

“I believe that is because it represents a genuine first for the maritime community in the Asia region. Our keynote theme is the Asian voice in world shipping”.

The shipping and maritime industries across Asia represent a large proportion of the global industry and Sea Asia represents a genuine opportunity for all interest groups to come together in Singapore to debate the future of our industries and how Asia can help shape the global industry for many years to come,”Mr Hayman added.

The launch of Sea Asia 2007 is set against a strong background of maritime growth in this region. Maritime trade in Asia Pacific is estimated at more than USD $100 billion, with Asian shipowners and managers accounting for at least 40% of the world’s shipping tonnage. In addition, twelve of the top 20 container lines in the world are Asian. Asia also supplies 50% of the world’s seafarers. These and other developments have further fueled Singapore’s maritime industry and driven forward Singapore ’s plans to be an International Maritime Centre (IMC). Currently, the maritime industry contributes 7% of Singapore ’s GDP and is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years.

MrTeo added : “It is timely to have a flagship maritime exhibition and conference to market and profile maritime competency at an international level. With strong industry support, Sea Asia 2007 will become the iconic platform for anyone with maritime interests in Asia and what the region has to offer the world.”

Abiennial event,Sea Asia’s mission is to deliver the highest quality exhibition, conference speakers and content.

The inaugural event is scheduled for 2 – 4 April 2007.
