Sea Asia 2009 Ends - Record breaking 10,000+ participants; Dates for 2011 Show Announced

Thursday April 23, 2009

Sea Asia 2009 ended on a high note this evening with a host of records broken at what is now confirmed as the region’s leading maritime conference and exhibition.

As Sea Asia closed at Suntec Singapore, it was revealed by the organisers that more than 10,000 people attended the three day event this week.

The number, comprising visitors, exhibitors, conference delegates, speakers and media, was announced as the dates for the next Sea Asia were confirmed.

The next Sea Asia will take place on April 12-14 in Singapore in 2011, co-organisers Seatrade and the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) said.

SMF chairman, Mr SS Teo said: “Sea Asia 2009 has been an outstanding success by any standard. Not only has the show managed to attract a total of more than 10,000 attendees, it has established itself as one of the key maritime events in the global shipping calendar.

“The enthusiasm for Sea Asia 2009 demonstrates that the need for a clearer and stronger voice for the Asian shipping community is now high on the international agenda. I am delighted that Sea Asia plays a leading role in promoting it.

“The level of international participation in Sea Asia from exhibitors and visitors alike demonstrates the show has become a must-attend event for shipping people all over the world.”

Andrew Callaghan, director of Seatrade, said: “These numbers cement Sea Asia’s status as a key event in the global maritime calendar. The Asian Voice theme has clearly chimed with the mood in the region.

“To achieve the figures we have seen across these past three days, in the current economic climate, shows the resilience, enthusiasm and adaptability of the Asian maritime community. They augur extremely well for our next event in 2011.”

Sea Asia has grown dramatically since its inauguration in 2007. This year’s show had more than 650 conference delegates and almost 200 exhibitor stands which comprised close to 350 companies.

There were 10,000+ participants from 56 countries around the world and from every continent.

There were 4,500 net square metres of exhibition space – a 60% increase on the launch show two years ago.

There were seven country pavilions – China, Singapore, Norway, Panama, Korea, Japan and the UK.

Sea Asia was the crown jewel of Singapore’s Maritime Week and show visitors were able to take part in a host of other side events and activities which truly reflected the strength and depth of Singapore’s emergence as an international maritime centre.

A poll of exhibitors at Sea Asia 2009 showed that around 90% of companies that exhibited at the event would come back for Sea Asia 2011.

As the show closed tonight and the end of show cocktail parties began, there was a throng of happy participants queuing up to endorse Sea Asia 2009.

Mr Tian Wei, deputy general manager of the China Classification Society, said: “If there is any maritime event to showcase our company in future, it is Sea Asia - we shall definitely be coming in 2011.

Violet Tan, manager, marketing and communications at Thuraya, the telecoms specialist, said: “It’s been a successful show for us and above all Sea Asia 2009 has generated a number of genuine business leads for us to follow up.

“The local component of Sea Asia was very strong and we were impressed by visitor numbers.”

Nick Roper, manager, Advisory Services, DNV Singapore said: “Sea Asia 2009 was a great opportunity for good quality meetings with owners at our stand.

“Sea Asia 2009 offered us the chance to have close co-operation with the international and Singapore media.

“The conference programme and the activities around the show were very positive and well done.”
